When the Allgäu celebrates
Every year around New Year, things get sporting at the Oberstdorf ski flying hill. The large Schattenbergschanze is the venue for the traditional opening jump of the Four Hills Tournament. Since the 1950s, this event has drawn thousands of spectators to Oberstdorf, making the town a regular meeting place for the international ski jumping elite.
More down-to-earth, but no less impressive, is the Alpabtrieb (Viehscheid) in Fischen in September. When the cows return to the valley adorned after their summer on the alpine pastures, it’s time to celebrate – with music, regional specialities and plenty of Allgäu tradition.
In December, winter reveals its mystical side. At the Klausentreiben, fearsome figures roam the villages with bells and switches. An age-old custom intended to drive out the evil winter spirits – loud, wild and truly impressive to see.
